October 25th-29th

 Hello Families,

Happy Halloween!

This week, students were working on their inferencing skills using Halloween themed riddles. We practiced looking for important words in the riddles which were clues as to what the author was trying to tell us. Then students made a conclusion on what the answer to the riddle was. Inference and conclusion were two new vocabulary words we talked about this week.

October 11th-15th

 Hello Families,

This week in Grade 2/3 we have been discussing how good readers are able to make predictions about a book before they even begin to read. When looking at the title of a book, it can usually give us some hints as to what the main problem in the story will be.

As a class, we looked at the cover of the book "Those Shoes" by Maribeth Boelts. Students came up with their own individual predictions about what will happen in the story by using a storyboard. Then we read the story as a class to see how close our predictions were to the plot of the book.

Next, students worked in small groups to reflect on what the problem in the book was and how the title connected to that problem.

October 4th-8th

 Hello Families,

This week in our writing we discussed how to tell if we have written a complete sentence or not. Students looked at examples of complete sentences and sentence fragments, and then we used our spelling words to practice writing complete sentences. The next step for us is to apply what we have learned about complete sentences to edit our stories we are working on in Story Workshop.

I can improve my work in writing.

September 27th-October 1st

Hello Families,

This week we spent some time reading different stories to support our work around Orange Shirt Day. It was really impressive to hear how many connections students already had to contribute to group discussions around this important subject.

We really appreciated both grade 1/2 classes sharing their learning of Orange Shirt Day with us.
It led to our class discussing how students should feel when they are at school, and then we brainstormed how students who attended residential schools may have felt. We used our list of words for how students should feel to add to our feathers which will be a part of a collaborative art piece with the other classes.

I can appreciate how stories of the past connect individuals and communities to the present.

I can appreciate the importance of collaboration and living in harmony.

Notes for Next Week:

Wednesday, October 6th afternoon 1:20-2:50 is our scheduled community walk.
