January 28th, 2022

 Hello everyone,

This week in literacy we worked confirming or adjusting our predictions of a story. We looked at books as a class and made predictions before reading based on the evidence of the title and any cover art. Then at the midway point of our story we stopped to see if our predictions were accurate or if we needed to adjust them based on new evidence we found while reading.

I can confirm the meaning of texts by applying a variety of comprehension strategies.

With Ms. Yasin this week in math, students reviewed and solidified addition strategies using mental math. Students reviewed number pairs to 10, doubles, near doubles and making friendly numbers. Then students began practicing place value addition, which requires numbers to be split up into their tens and ones parts. Then the tens are added together, and the ones are added together. Students can use this mental math strategy to quickly add larger numbers together!

Ms. Yasin’s literacy groups continued clarifying their comprehension of their novels by working through tricky words. Students practiced using context clues and previous knowledge to make an educated guess on what a word meant. Then students confirmed their thoughts using a dictionary.

 Hello Families,

This week we combined our Science and art as we discussed magnetism. We learned how the Earth has its own magnetic field and that this combined with energy from the Sun creates Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis. Students demonstrated through experiments this week that they:

-Understood that magnets attract different metals and not other objects.

-Different magnets have more or less magnetism than others.

-Magnets have a North and a South pole.

Next, we created our own Aurora borealis landscapes using tempera paint and chalk pastels.

We were pretty impressed with our art work when it was all said and done!

With Ms. Yasin this week in our literacy groups, we talked about clarifying our understanding while reading. We worked on our comprehension by first understanding any tricky words we came across! We explored dictionaries, what they are used for and how to use them. We are quickly learning how to use consecutive letters in a word and the order of the alphabet to find our tricky words in the dictionary. We have learned so many new words this week! One group learned what “rambunctious” meant, while another group had fun finding words like “velocity” and “sphinx” in the dictionary.

With Ms. Yasin this week in math, we started by sorting 2D shapes from the environment into groups based on their sides, side lengths and vertices.

We then continued to focus on mental math strategies by learning how to use doubles facts and doubles + 1 to quickly solve a math equation. We had fun playing the doubles + 1 game with a partner! We finished off the week learning a new mental math strategy using friendly numbers! The number 10 (and all its multiples) is our best friend!

In music we watched a performance called Napi and the Rock put on by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.  Some of the students were away when we watched it and others would like to watch it again. I told the students I would send along the link to the CPO so they could watch if they wanted to.  It. is a 30 minute program and is quite enjoyable to watch.

Hello families,

It was great to be able to get back into the classroom this week! Students were definitely excited to be back and we had a great week.

Both grade 2 and 3 students spent this week learning about 2 dimensional shapes in math. Grade 2 students examined triangles and quadrilaterals and found examples of these shapes in the real world. Grade 3 students focused on defining different polygons such as triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and octagons. Below are some quotes from students reflecting on this week's learning:

In math this week we learned about geometry, doubles for addition. In geometry we learned about making 2d shapes. 2d shapes have a width and a length. Also, 2d shapes are important because they are used everyday and you can see them everywhere!

In Science we learned about magnets. We learned that they stick to metal, and things that are not metal they do not stick to. - Nora

In math this week we learned about different polygons. A polygon has all straight sides and has to be a closed shape. Like triangles, hexagons and quadrilaterals. Quadrilaterals have 4 sides and 4 vertices. A vertice is where 2 lines meet to make a corner.

I can sort polygons using one or more attributes.

Hello families,  Today we had a successful activity day! Despite the rain we still had a blast playing games, creating art with Kindergarte...
