 Hello families,

This week in Math the grade 3 students continued to build on our measurements skills. As a class we learned how calculate the perimeter of shapes using centimetres as our unit of measurement. Students then created their own perimeter people art on grid paper and calculated the perimeter of their design.

I can demonstrate an understanding of perimeter using standard units.

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students learned about Canadian coins. They explored each individual coin, what it looks like, and it's value in cents. Students were encouraged to use the correct vocabulary and talk about the coins using their names (nickel, dime, quarter, loonie, toonie). Everyone was excited to use real money to sort and count coins! The class ended off the week with adding different coins together to make a sum less that one dollar. Learning was extended with the opportunity for students to create a sum using any coins they wanted. We came up with multiple ways to make one value!

Notes:

-If you have any empty cardboard cereal boxes, We are looking to collect them for an upcoming project in Math. If you could bring any to school that would be fantastic!

 Hello families,

The highlight of this week for students was our field trip! We had a blast at Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area and students did a great job throughout the day maintaining a positive attitude on our big hike and being respectful to our instructors. It was a successful first field trip of the year!

This week in Science, our class demonstrated the analogy between cookies and rocks to demonstrate the composition of rocks, and that they are made up of a variety of materials called minerals.

The Earth is really like a cook/ chef who uses heat, motion, and pressure to form different rocks. This activity encouraged the students to draw an analogy between the different types of minerals/ ingredients that rock and cookies are made of. Therefore, the Earth is just like a cook who mixes various ingredients together to make a rock.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and is looking forward to our field trip on May 4th next week!

 Hello Families,

This week in Literacy our focus was on clarifying tricky words. As a class we read the book "Watercress." We paused throughout the story to pay special attention to some challenging words. We discussed strategies when we come across words we don't know such as reading the sentence to think of what makes sense. Some new words that we came across included: glinting, squelching and abrupt. Working together we used the context of the story to gain the definition of these words and use them in our own sentences.

A couple of other notes of upcoming events:

-Next week expect a field trip form in your child's backpack. We are scheduled to spend the day at Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation area on May 4th! If you would like to volunteer for this trip please email me at dajackson@cbe.ab.ca and I can send home the volunteer forms as well.

-If you have any empty cardboard cereal boxes, We are looking to collect them for an upcoming project in Math. If you could bring any to school that would be fantastic!

Thanks and have a great weekend,

Drew

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students explored fact families! This involved looking at 3 related numbers and identifying their addition and subtraction relationships. Further, students were able to use this learning to find missing numbers in their fact families and create related facts from an addition or subtraction equation.

Music Update
Grades 1-6 were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to view the Opera The Brothers Grimm performed by Calgary Opera.  This was a free virtual performance we watched during music time.  We did have a few students away and a few wanted to share it with their families.  I have attached the link which is live until April 29th at 6:00PM.  Please feel free to view it.  The program is about 50 minutes.  We will be doing follow up activities in music class next week around this performance.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me.

 Hello Families,

This week in math the Grade 3 students were given a multiplication challenge. In an envelope students were given a puzzle that had to be connected by solving multiplication questions. Some of these equations were really tricky, and it was definitely a challenge! But it was great to see students work through hard problems together.

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students had a chance to practice their addition and subtraction regrouping! Students were able to choose any strategy they were comfortable with to show this number sense skill. This included using manipulatives, working with place value, and using the standard algorithm. Everyone did a great job of double checking their work to make sure they indicated what they were regrouping/borrowing and from where. This will help them keep track of their process!

I hope everyone is having a great long weekend and we will see everyone back at school on Tuesday!
