June 24th, 2022

 Hello families,

Today we had a successful activity day! Despite the rain we still had a blast playing games, creating art with Kindergarten and having a special lunch together.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week on Monday and our last day of school Tuesday as we wrap up the school year!

During this last week in math with Ms. Yasin, students had the opportunity to review their number sense learning from the year. Students learned a new medium to do this through: Kahoot! This is an online space where you can find quizzes (from all subjects) to play with your peers! Everyone did an amazing job listening to instructions and then navigating the process through their ipads.

 Hello families,

This week, our class put their knowledge of testing materials and designs, bridges and measurement to work as their challenge was to build a bridge using only popsicle sticks and liquid glue. Students created a blueprint plan for how they wanted their bridge to look before beginning construction. Once completed, the bridge will have to span a gap of 25 cm and see if it can hold a mass of 60 1 gram cubes. In art we have been looking at the impressionist paintings of Claude Monet and created our own version using acrylic paint, oil pastel and construction paper.

Math with Ms. Yasin
this week was full of estimating sums and differences. Students used their knowledge of rounding to the nearest 10 to estimate answers for addition and subtraction questions. The group had insightful discussions around when they could use estimation in their daily lives. For example, they could use estimation when shopping, when planning how many birthday party supplies are needed or when measuring length or distance.

Notes for Next week:

Wednesday June 22nd- Field Trip to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
Friday June 24th- Ramsay School activity day

 Hello families,

This week in writing we were busy sharing our completed fictional stories, and then having some fun by developing superheroes. We discussed how superheroes need origin stories and reasons why they have their powers and what their mission is. We also dove deeper on our superheroes by including what would be in their fridge, or what their favourite karaoke song would be. It was awesome to see the collaboration between students as they shared ideas about their original superheroes while they practiced character development. We then took our superheroes and began writing an original comic book for them.

Notes:

-Our last field trip of the year is scheduled for June 22nd at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. If you are interested in volunteering please email Mr. Jackson at: dajackson@cbe.ab.ca

Students in Ms. Yasin's math class worked on estimating this week! They used their previously learned friendly numbers to estimate "to the nearest 10". In estimation, we call these multiples of 10 "benchmarks". The group learned about the "midpoint" of each set of 10 numbers - for example, the midpoint between 20 and 30 is 25.  Any number that is at the midpoint or higher will round up to the multiple of 10 that comes directly after it. Any number that is lower than the midpoint will round down to the multiple of 10 right before. For example 27 will round to 30 while 22 will round to 20.
Students had the opportunity to apply their estimation skills to addition and subtraction questions where we did not need to know exact answers!
